In the abstract artworks of Frans Klerkx (Mill, 1932) both the functionality of the fold and the simplicity of geometric shapes take center stage. His ‘Plaatplastieken’ (‘Sheet Sculptures’) made from stainless steel, corten steel, or aluminum, are the result of a three-dimensional application of the flat plane, originating from a sheet of paper, a pencil, and a ruler.
Klerkx's work is spatial in the truest sense of the word. Form manifests itself not only as volume but also as space. His sculptures not only occupy space but also establish a relationship with it. This creates a dynamic interplay between form and emptiness, adding light and air to the composition.
