St. Norbertus Monastery - 1862 – 1976
In 1862, the Sisters of Charity came to Gennep. Their importance to the town grew quickly, especially in education, elderly care and healthcare. The nearby sanatorium Maria Oord also fell under their care.
After the Second World War, only the monastery with the retirement home was rebuilt. The building later temporarily served as the town hall. After its demolition, the current town hall was built here, designed by Alberts and Van Huut.
This location was also once home to the synagogue from 1874, which was destroyed during the war.
