Sanatorium Maria Oord - 1918 – 1945

Sanatorium Maria Oord was the oldest of the two tuberculosis recovery centres in Gennep. Patients from across the country came here to recover over a longer period.

Medical care was provided by Doctor Stiemens and the Sisters of Charity from the nearby St. Norbertus Monastery.

In February 1945, during the heavy fighting at the end of the Second World War, the building was severely damaged and never rebuilt. Thanks to the development of penicillin during the war, the number of tuberculosis cases quickly declined afterwards.
