Groene Gracht (Green Moat)

General

You are standing in the Groene Gracht. This green strip forms a ring around the historic centre of Gennep. The area has a long history and today is a pleasant place to walk and relax.

From city moat to green area

In the 14th century, the city moat of Gennep was constructed here. The moat protected the fortified town against attacks. The water came from the dammed Niers River. This did not always work well, because the moat lay on a Maas dune. The moat of Gennep was unusual: it was a double moat. The second moat was located on the site of today’s Melkstraatje.

Daily use through the years

Later, the moat lost its defensive function. People began to use the area in other ways. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about 30 allotment gardens here. In this way, the Groene Gracht became part of everyday life.

The Groene Gracht today

Today, the Groene Gracht has a park-like character. You will find walking paths, green areas and trees, seating areas, play facilities and art.

In 2026, the Groene Gracht was further improved. The municipality planted new native plants. Information panels, artworks and additional play and rest areas were also added. Much attention was paid to nature and wildlife, with features such as insect hotels and a water element for children.

Enjoy past and present

The Groene Gracht is now an important historical, recreational and ecological area. Take a leisurely walk through this area and experience how past and present come together here.
